Istanbul is filled with some of the world’s best museums. Historical artifacts and evidence of civilization from thousands of years ago, around the Anatolia and Mesopotamia periods and pre-historical ages are scattered throughout several museums in Istanbul. HISTORICAL MUSEUMS
o Archeological Museum – Built in three locations, this museum includes architectural structures that resemble the Greek temples; mosaics excavated dating back to 1935 and archeological artifacts from Egypt, Arabia, Anatolia and Mesopotamia.
o Military Museum – If you’re interested in army gear and history, this museum is home to old gun models, army clothing and military tools.
o Naval Museum – Displays documents and goods throughout the history of Turkish navigation.
o Yedikule Museum – Used to be a prison, this site plays an important role in Byzantium and Ottoman histories.
o Historical Sites – Most Istanbul museums today were used as important sites through history. These include the Yerebatan Palace, Dolmabahce Palace and Beylerbeyi Palace.
MUSEUMS OF FAMOUS PEOPLE
o Asiyan Museum – If you like poetry and other literary works of Poet Tevfik Fikret, visit this museum at the ridges of Rumelia.
o Ataturk Museum – The old house of Ataturk, where his mother and family lived, will come alive complete with his personal belongings found at Sisli.
MUSEUMS OF ARTS AND CULTURE
o Tiled Kiosk – Found at the Topkapi Palace, this museum presents amazing Turkish tiles and ceramic pieces throughout history.
o Classical Turkish Literature Museum – Includes manuscripts about Muslim literature and religion situated at Itfaiye, Faith.
o “Paintings and Sculpture Museum”, “Tanzimat Museum” and “Turkish & Islamic Works Museum” – Displays magnificent paintings and sculptures of famous Turkish artists
o Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art – Filled with Turkish and International contemporary arts for young artists; holds seminars and lectures by experienced artists around the world.
