Nightlife
Nightlife in Istanbul is not Vegas-like, but it is definitely worth experiencing. Istanbul offers a wide range of establishments perfect for your night out, ranging from rave and techno nightclubs, male-dominated bars and other social establishments with live music. More and more venues are opening each month as Istanbul is becoming popular as one of the liveliest cities in Europe.
If you’re planning to experience the lively city, here are some guidelines and recommendations to make your stay a memorable one:
1. Mehaynes, the most common Turkish venues around, usually serve beer, wine and raki. Popular Mehaynes are found around Cicek Pasaj in Beyoglu. On your way to Cicek Pasaj, you may also encounter street musicians playing classic Turkish music and foreign songs.
2. Birahanes, a bar where beer is preferred than food, is usually packed by males of all ages. Local women are rarely seen on such venues, but the locals can easily welcome foreign women. However, it is best to stay away from all-male bars when going out alone.
3. Exotic clubs, which is home to Romanian and Russian dancers, belly dancers, cabaret singers and other artists to play oriental shows, can be seen with neon lights and photos of sexy girls at the entrance. However, these types of venues are now being replaced by modern venues like cafes and rock bars.
4. Opening hours of bars are long, some going until 4 to 5 in the morning.
5. Rock bars offer cheap beer, but expect a rather shabby environment as people come from the live shows playing classic rock and heavy metal. One of the best rock bars in Istanbul is the Koprualti Kemanci situated in Taksim.
6. Top-end clubs are also available for the elite. These clubs offer stylish architecture and modern designs, situated around the cities of Izmir, Ankara and Istanbul.
7. Gay bars are available mainly in Istanbul.
The nightlife in Istanbul is not hard on the pocket as prices of beer and entrance fees are kept extremely low compared to other European cities.
If you want to experience hardcore partying, try the Mojo Blues Bar, Kemanci and Hayal Kavhesi located at the heart of Istanbul. You can also go on a trip down the beach and try barhopping along the Bosphorus. Whether you just want to have a good time, drink a beer, meet the locals or enjoy Turkish music, Istanbul has all types of venues to cater your entertainment needs.
