Istanbul Restaurants
Istanbul offers a wide array of food choices, from classy fine dining to simple sidewalk eateries. Whether you have the means to splurge on fancy restaurants in Istanbul or you are on a strict budget, there’s always a place in the city to satisfy your taste. There are five major areas where you can get the value-for-money and delicious foods. These include:
1. Old Istanbul – Since most of the restaurants here serve European dishes, foreign visitors frequent this area. Located at the heart of the cities lies in Sultanahmet’s best restaurants like the Hippie place, Lala Restaurant & Pudding Shop, Canadian-owned Java Studio and the cozy Balikçi Sabahattin among others. Prices of food in this area may be a little expensive compared to street eateries that offer local cuisine.
2. Sirkeci-Eminonu – If you prefer a mix of international and local foods, places like Egyptian Spice Bazaar and Galata Bridge near the Sirkeci railroad station can satisfy your cravings. However, if you prefer authentic Turkish food, then head on the small eateries found under the Galata Bridge or at the backstreets of Old Istanbul. Try the famous Istanbul fish sandwich and experience authentic local cuisine. I would recommended checking out the Grand Bazaar, located near the Beyazit Square, and enjoy good food at low prices. Hamdi Et Lokantasi is famous for its roasted and grilled meats.
3. Hocapasa – Patronized mostly by locals, the restaurants near the Sirkeci south station offers a dozen of small eateries that cater good food and friendly service. I would recommend trying the Turkish pizza called “pide”. Foods in this area come in low to moderate prices.
4. Beyoglu – Here you can find food bargains at the streets near Istiklal Caddesi, where local eateries, pastry shops, cafes, bistros and restaurants offer mostly local dishes.
5. Bosphorus – With restaurants lined up near the Asian and European shores, you will find plenty of restaurants here that serve seafood dishes. Try the local kebap; meaning, “roasted” that is available as lamb, chicken or chestnuts. People come here to enjoy the great view and fine local foods with moderate prices.
Restaurants in Istanbul come in various shapes, sizes, architectural history and food choices. Whether you want to eat hamburger and fries or experience authentic Turkish foods, Istanbul has the restaurant to please your appetite.
